Abbey Bessler holds a 3.235 grade-point average as an occupational therapy major at Xavier Univeristy. She is a three-time (2013-15) Big EAST All-Academic Team and 14-time Big EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection.

Character

Bessler serves as one of the team captains and has transformed from a quiet freshman to a senior leader who is vocal on and off the court with her teammates. She also battled through anemia that went undiagnosed until her freshman year of college to be one of the best players in the Big EAST.

Community

Bessler has taught volleyball at two local grade schools since her time on campus and has helped at a local high school’s leadership program on Saturday mornings. The team helps the Mary Rose Mission by making hundreds of breadsticks for the local shelter and provides hot meals to the homeless. This semester, she will have completed 30 hours of service at InReturn as a requirement for her a course in her major.

Competition

Bessler will graduate as one of the most decorated players in school history. She was the ?2015 BIG EAST Player of the Year, a ?2014 AVCA All-Region Honorable Mention? selection and a 2013 AVCA All-America Honorable Mention honoree. She was a two-time first-team AVCA All-Region selection, the 2013 AVCA East Region Rookie of the Year, and a three-time (2013-15) first-team All-Big EAST honoree. Her weekly accolades include three-time Big EAST Player of the Week? and two-time Big EAST Freshman of the Week honors. She currently ranks fourth in school history in kills, second in points and attack attempts and eighth in digs.
