Abby Jones, a health science major, has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.98 through the first three years of her collegiate career. She was named to the All-ACC Academic Women’s Soccer Team in 2015 and is a three-time member of the ACC’s Academic Honor Roll (2013, 2014, 2015). She has been a member of Clemson University’s President’s List (4.0 GPA) the past four consecutive semesters, and was on the Dean’s List (3.5-3.99 GPA) the two semesters prior.

Character

Jones is a two-time team co-captain (2015 and 2016), a position that is voted on by the players on the Clemson team. She also earned the Team Leadership Award at the team’s postseason banquet in 2015 as selected by the Clemson coaching staff. At the Clemson Athletic Department’s annual athletic and academic awards banquet in the spring of 2016, Jones earned one of the highest awards, as she was the recipient of the Solid Orange Female Athlete Award, which is presented to an individual who exemplifies what it means to be a Clemson student-athlete through leadership, athletic performance, service, academics and sportsmanship.

Community

Impacting the community has been a priority of Jones’ since she arrived on the Clemson campus. Her biggest contribution has been the Palmetto Series Canned Food Drive, a competition between Clemson and rival South Carolina in which canned foods are collected to benefit local food banks. Jones has spearheaded the food drive from the beginning, coming up with the idea, doing the legwork to bring the idea to fruition and now continuing to organize, direct and grow the project. Jones works with food banks in three major cities in South Carolina: Greenville, Columbia and the Clemson-Anderson area. She has worked with local businesses in these communities to enable them to accept donations at their stores. Jones frequently leads meetings with 20-plus people, including not just other college students and volunteers, but also business professionals in the community. She also works with creative and marketing teams from both Clemson and South Carolina to help market the food drive. Jones is the president of Clemson’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for the 2016-17 year. She is a three-year member of SAAC and served as the vice chair of the organization’s community outreach subcommittee in 2015-16. During those three years, she has been highly involved with the organization, not only with the Palmetto Series Canned Food Drive, but also several other projects. Most recently, she served as a peer mentor for Clemson’s summer immersion program for incoming student-athletes.

Competition

Jones was named to the All-ACC Third Team in 2015. She finished her junior season ranked in a tie for third on the Clemson team in scoring with three goals and four assists for 10 points. She started all 20 matches for the Tigers in 2015, playing 1,549 minutes. Through mid-September, she has played in 61 matches, starting 49, and has five goals and seven assists, playing primarily as a midfielder.
