Classroom

Gartner enters his senior year with a 3.64 cumulative GPA while majoring in Finance. His career ambition is to go into banking. His academic honors include: 2007 NSCAA Second Team Scholar All-American, 2007 NSCAA First Team All-Region Scholar, two-time ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District, and two-time First Team MVC Scholar-Athlete.

Character

Gartner and his classmates have been the driving force behind a program renaissance. Gartner played midfielder his first two seasons but moved to defender last season in an effort to help the team win. While his scoring opportunities went down, EIU’s win total went up. In 2007, he was one of three Panthers to log at least 1,000 minutes that was not issued a Yellow Card.

Community

Gartner and his teammates are active in the local community and participate in several programs such as: coaching youth academy teams on Mondays, reading to local elementary school students, helping out the annual chili supper fund raiser at Jefferson Elementary School in Charleston, lending a hand with Market Day grocery pickup at Charleston schools, taking part in free soccer clinics before games, and participating in the annual indoor Futsal Soccer Clinic on campus that is open to area youth.

Competition

Gartner ranked second in the Missouri Valley Conference in 2007 with nine assists, the fourth highest single-season total in EIU history. He has been awarded for the 2008 Preseason All-MVC, 2007 NSCAA Third Team All-Midwest Region, 2007 Second Team All-MVC, and 2005 Honorable Mention All-MVC.
