Classroom
Akira Fitzgerald maintains a 3.16 GPA in communication with a double minor in psychology and entrepreneurship and social enterprise. In addition, Fitzgerald is a member of the 2009 All-ACC Academic team, he’s made the ACC Honor Roll four times and he’s a five-time Dean’s List honoree.
Character
Fitzgerald struggled with his transition to college, dealing with both the disappointment of taking a redshirt and challenges in the classroom. Since then, however, Fitzgerald has matured as a student and a player, assuming the captain’s role in his junior and senior seasons. Fitzgerald holds team members to a high standard in terms of character and behavior and last season he earned the team’s academic award. Outside of soccer, Fitzgerald is a trained classical pianist and he speaks fluent Japanese.
Community
Fitzgerald has participated in numerous community service activities, including Organ Donor Walk, Eat with the Deacs, Wake-n-Shake, Project Pumpkin, Ronald McDonald House and Habitat for Humanity. He’s also a member of the Wake Forest Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Competition
The Demon Deacons’ starting goalkeeper for 48 straight games, Fitzgerald enters his senior season ranked first in school history in goals against average (0.67). As a junior he ranked third in the ACC in goals against average (0.72) and led Wake Forest to a 17-4-3 record.
