Alex Gerke

Alex is on pace to graduate this spring with a degree in geography.  He has been a member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll for the spring of 2011 and 2012.

Gerke has been named a captain for his senior season.  A leader by example the past few years, he’s taken on a more vocal role with the team in his final year with the Huskies.

Alex volunteers as a member of the Husky Reach Program. UConn student-athletes volunteer time at Verplanck Elementary School to work with the students there and create a culture of hope through both academics and athletics. UConn student-athletes work with the young boys and girls who attend Verplanck to promote the concepts of sportsmanship, integrity, teamwork and the value of education.

As a team, Alex has participated in “Skate with the Huskies”, a community service outreach program to teach the local community about hockey, fitness, skating and sportsmanship. The community is welcome on the ice after a home game to meet and greet the Huskies and skate at the rink.

Last holiday season, the members of the men’s ice hockey team volunteered as bell ringers for the Salvation Army.

Alex has also volunteered raising money for HARC, an organization based out of Hartford which works with families and individuals with intellectual disabilities. HARC helps people with intellectual disabilities to ensure that their families enjoy lives of quality, inclusion and dignity by providing support, education and advocacy. During the course of an afternoon, the team worked at rest stations playing games with the participants. The charity walk took place at Renstchler Field this fall.

Gerke has been on the top defensive pairing for the Huskies for the past three seasons. A 2012 All-AHA Second Team Selection, he set a new record for points by a defenseman with 25 on six goals and 19 assists.  Gerke was the leader of a power play that ranked third in the nation in 2012 at 25.7-percent.  He enters 2012-13 with 14 goals, 30 assists and 44 points.
