Classroom

Gray-Lawson is a social welfare major who is considering going to law school after graduating. She is on track to graduate in May 2010. Her current cumulative GPA is 2.710.

Character

One of nine children in her family, Gray-Lawson chose to attend college close to her hometown of Oakland so she can continue to be part of the life of her brothers and sisters. She is a focused and determined young woman who looks at the challenges of life as just that - challenges. And challenges can be overcome. She works hard in all that she does, never does anything halfway, and is one of the most dedicated and dependable people on the squad.

Community

For the past four seasons, Gray-Lawson has donated her time to a variety of community service projects. She volunteers once a month at the Berkeley Food and Housing Project Quarter Meal. The “quarter meal” is a free hot meal served three times a week in Berkeley. She has done various clinics and spoken at low-income inner city Oakland elementary schools.  She has been pen pals with the children involved in Girls Incorporated and has been an excellent role model for these young ladies.  Girls Incorporated is a national nonprofit youth organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. The largest project that she and the rest of the team have been involved with is raising money for the SEEDS Organization, a charity that benefits orphanages and other welfare institutions in Africa. After visiting Senegal and Tunisia in the summer of 2008, making a difference in Africa has been a priority for Gray-Lawson and very much a personal mission. Last year, combined fundraising efforts supported a $16,000 donation to SEEDS.

Competition

Gray-Lawson was a 2008-09 first team All-Pac-10 selection and Associated Press honorable mention All-American. She became the 20th player in Cal history to score 1,000 career points, hitting that mark less than a month into her junior season. She scored a career-high 37 points last year in Cal’s upset victory over No. 2-ranked Stanford. She was one of the top players in the country last season in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.522). She averages 12.5 points per game for her career. She was named the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year in 2006.
