Classroom

Amber Freeman was a Second-Team CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2014 as a junior majoring in health sciences. She is a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection and boasts a 3.39 GPA. She also is a member of ASU’s scholar-baller program, awarded to student-athletes who maintain over a 3.00 cumulative GPA during their time at ASU.

Character

Freeman has torn her meniscus three times in her life and suffered an injury that displaced her femur from her hip prior to entering high school. That injury resulted in her doctors telling her she’d never play softball again. She also broke her foot after her junior season and has endured five surgeries all to her left side in her playing career. To repair the damage done, she has a three-inch titanium screw in her left hip. Despite that, Freeman has worked to improve her batting average each season at ASU and become a two-time All-American.

Community

Freeman spent the past two seasons writing a blog for ESPNW detailing her life and activities on and off the field, providing a medium to fans and other young female athletes to follow the progress of one of the top female student-athletes in the country. Freeman spends time in numerous community service activities, including her connection with Jose Reyes, a young man with autism who is a huge fan of the Sun Devil program. Freeman and the team took him under their wing to serve as an honorary team manager at several practices and as an honorary captain at ASU games last season.

Competition

The 2013 Pac-12 Player of the Year and two-time All-American (Second-Team 2014), Amber Freeman, entered her season season on USA Softball National Player of the Year Watch List. In 2014, she led the team with a .406 batting average that went down as the 13th-best single season mark in program history. Freeman led the team with 69 hits and a .480 OBP as well, while ranking second on the team in RBI with 44. Freeman hit safely in all but 11 games on the season and reached base in all but five games of the 57 appearances she made. Additionally, Freeman had just one error on the season, recording 318 putouts and 11 assists for an almost perfect .997 fielding percentage. Freeman currently finds herself fifth in ASU history with 41 home runs, 10th with 146 RBI, 18th with 187 total hits and 14th with 30 doubles.
