A true student-athlete, Amy Matula has shown that its possible to excel in both academics and athletics. Matula is a member of Lehigh’s Integrated Business and Engineering (IBE) Honors Program and is working toward a degree in environmental engineering. She currently owns a strong 3.44 grade-point average.

A two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member, Matula has successfully completed several internships to set herself up for future success in the field of environmental engineering. This past summer, Matula spent time interning for PricewaterhouseCoopers as a Financial Instruments, Structured Products and Real Estate intern. She worked doing bond valuation including sovereign and municipal bonds and preparing tax returns. Matula has also had experience interning with the Lehigh Silicon Valley Entrepreneurship Program and Environmental, Health and Safety Customer Service.

Character

Matula, a two-time team captain, has shown her leadership both on and off the court. She is actively involved in leadership activities around campus and beyond. As a Student-Athlete Mentor, Matula helps first-year student-athletes in the adjustment to like at Lehigh by helping them develop good habits for success in college and beyond. She is also a member of the Lehigh Leadership Legacies program, the most selective program in Lehigh’s Leadership Academy, which focuses on solving team problems with open dialogue.

In winter of 2015, Matula was an attendant at the USNA Leadership Conference that explored the challenges of being an authentic leader in a world where advancing technology both facilitates and hinders the leader and follower relationship. Matula also participated in the Leadership in Croatia Experience, a nine-day leadership development program in Croatia for student-athletes with an international leadership certification.

Matula has also received two major awards from the university. She was named a recipient of Lehigh’s Contribution to Student Life Award in the spring of 2015. The award is given to students who have significantly contributed to improving the quality of student life during their time at Lehigh. Matula was also awarded the Lehigh Class of 2014, giving to selected rising seniors on the basis of character, scholarship, qualifications indicating promise of future leadership and extracurricular activities.

Community

Matula is an active member of the Lehigh Athletics Adopt-A-Family program. Matula and the volleyball team “adopt” a local underprivileged family and provide them with a Christmas in the program. The team fundraises, shops, wraps and delivers the gifts to their families in order to foster strong relationships with the surrounding community and help those in need.

Competition

Matula earned preseason All-Patriot League distinction entering the 2015 season after wrapping up a junior campaign in which she was named first-team All-Patriot League. Matula, the starting setter in each of the past two seasons, has helped Lehigh to back-to-back 20-plus win seasons for just the second time in program history and first time since 1981 and 1982. The Mountain Hawks have made the four-team field of the Patriot League Tournament for each of Matula’s three seasons and made it to the league championship match a season ago for the first time since 2002.

During her standout junior campaign that earned her first-team All-League laurels, Matula tallied 1,085 assists, good for an average of 9.86 that ranked second-best in the Patriot League. She recorded an average of 10.14 assists per set during league play to help Lehigh to a program-record 14 Patriot League wins and a trip to the Patriot League Championship. She earned two Patriot League Player of the Week awards during the season and registered 16 double-doubles throughout the season. She also earned a Player of the Week award during her sophomore campaign in which she dished a team-best 979 assists.

Entering the 2015 season, Matula’s career total of 2,502 assists currently ranked fourth on Lehigh’s all-time career leaders board.
