Andrew Dorantes was an American Hockey Coaches Association All-America Scholar in 2016-17. He has earned both WCHA All-Academic Team and WCHA Scholar-Athlete Team honors the last three seasons, and he is a FSU Dean’s & President’s Academic Award recipient.

Donates helps the program annually rank among the nation’s top academic teams in the NCAA APR listing, is a team leader in the classroom with an impressive 3.86 GPA in a challenging degree program and completed a field study internship this past summer. He consistently ranks among team’s top performers in the classroom and one of school’s top student-athletes regardless of sport. He is on track to graduate in four years from Ferris State University and is an Academic All-America candidate again in 2017-18 as a senior at FSU.

Character

Dorantes is an outstanding individual on and off the ice as a fourth-year member of the hockey program. He has been a role model for young fans and teammates in the program, and he is a leader in the classroom, in the community and on the ice at Ferris State. He is a fan favorite who displays great sportsmanship and works hard.

Because of strong role models like Dorantes, the entire Ferris State hockey team is academically sound and has ranked among the nation’s top 10 teams in the annual NCAA Academic Progress Report (APR) listing.

Community

Dorantes displays sportsmanship off the ice by volunteering for a variety of different organizations that help those with disabilities. He is active with FSU Hockey annually as they play floor hockey with local Big Rapids Special Olympians. He volunteers with the team for various community endeavors such as the Playscape clean-up project for children and reading to elementary students. He played a role with the team in various community projects to raise funds for military veterans and breast cancer assistance, and he also serves as a role model for youth, signing autographs and skating with kids during annual team skates. As a team member, he’s also been involved in various other charitable and civic projects such as reading to children in schools, taking part in middle school activity nights and working to restore a children’s youth playground each year.

Competition

Dorantes is a four-year letter winner and ranks as one of team’s top scorers on an annual basis. He has played on the team’s top lines throughout his collegiate career and played in 109 collegiate games with 44 points on 15 goals and 29 assists at FSU early into his senior season. He helped lead the team to the NCAA Final Eight and the WCHA Final Five Championship during the 2015-16 season.

The team has been a strong contender in the WCHA annually and has been one of college hockey’s winningest programs over the past decade. Dorantes helped lead the team to two WCHA Final Five appearances in his career and three-straight postseason playoff berths in the league. He has ranked as one of the squad’s leading scorers and point producers throughout his career. He played in 33 games and had 15 points as a junior in the 2016-17 season and totaled 20 points on eight goals and 12 assists in 39 contests as a sophomore after notching six points in 33 games as a freshman at Ferris State.
