Character

JMU head softball coach Katie Flynn said, “Ashley’s teammates look up to her. Her coaches respect her and appreciate her as a player, and as a person, she is very special.” Burnham is the JMU team leader, serving as a captain for the second consecutive year in 2012. She is one of the hardest workers of the team and comes to play every game. She is willing to do whatever is asked of her to help the team win and enjoys her teammates’ success more than her own.

Community

Burnham and her teammates have gone the extra mile to be leaders in the community. The team was the first to win the Exemplary Community Service Award in 2009. Every season they host their annual StrikeOut Cancer game and to date have raised more than $14,000 for the American Cancer Society. In addition they have helped organize the purchase of Christmas gifts for local children, visited local elementary schools and read to the kids and many other community service activities over the years.

Competition

Burnham is only the second player in school history to be First Team All-Colonial Athletic Association twice and is the only player to earn NFCA All-Region honors twice. She was the 2010 CAA Player of the Year as a sophomore and was a First Team NFCA All-Northeast Region honoree in 2011. Burnham has started every game of her career at shortstop for the Dukes and holds the school record for consecutive games started. In addition she holds the career record for lead-off home runs with six while setting single season marks for home runs (13), assists (152), on-base percentage (.452) and slugging percentage (.724). She ranks second in program history in runs, home runs, third in total bases, fourth in hits, fifth in triples and sixth in walks.
