Ashton Moore

Classroom

In the 2013-14 academic year, Moore held an overall 3.559 GPA and a cumulative GPA of 3.353 in health, exercise and sport science. Moore also holds the rank of Captain at The Citadel because of his title of team captain for the basketball team. Since coming to The Citadel as a freshman in 2011, Moore has been a member of the Dean’s List on three occasions, which he achieved by carry a GPA of 3.2 or better for a semester. He also used this past summer as an opportunity to work in The Citadel’s Strength & Conditioning department as a student-assistant where he was responsible for implementing daily training plans for the athletes, scheduling of workouts and the overall maintenance of the weight room.

Character

Ashton Moore has been an impact individual both on the court and in the classroom since his arrival to The Citadel. Moore has displayed a distinct leadership in the classroom, among the Corps of Cadets and also with his team. Over the last two years, Moore has served as the team captain, which has given him the title of Captain within the Corps of Cadets. Moore has developed himself into a solid leader on the team in the classroom with his 3.353 GPA and on the court as he has moved within 142 points of becoming the 31st 1,000-point scorer in Citadel basketball history. He has emerged from a quiet student of the game of basketball into someone who is leading the team in the locker room with his vocal leadership, as well as on the court with his playing style.

Community

As the two-year team captain, Moore has been a critical part of The Citadel basketball program’s relationship with nearby MUSC Children’s Hospital. MUSC (Medical University of South Carolina) is dedicated to enhancing the health of children throughout South Carolina and to providing an environment that supports excellence in pediatric patient care, teaching and research. The Citadel has conducted several meet-and-greets with children who are part of MUSC’s Child Life Department. Along with the relationship with MUSC, he has participated in The Citadel’s hosting of the Mt. Pleasant Recreation Center FUNdamentals Clinic, in which they conduct clinics with more than 300 5- and 6-year-olds to help them improve their pivoting, passing, dribbling, defense and layups. Over the last three years, Moore has also participated in the Charleston-area’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s and Diabetes Walk, conducted several reading days with area schools and taken an active membership in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). He also plans to help host a basketball clinic for Special Olympics of South Carolina in 2014-15.

Competition

A four-year starter under coach Chuck Driesell, Moore has steadily climbed up several of The Citadel’s all-time lists including scoring (858 points, 46th), field goals made (289, t41st), 3-point field goals made (128, t11th), free throws made (152, 54th) and assists (188, 18th). Furthermore, he joined Marshall Harris III as the first set of Bulldog teammates to have 100 assists in same season. Moore’s play against Southern Conference competition—where he led the Citadel lineup in minutes (587), field goals made (86), field goals attempted (206), 3-point field goals made (43), 3-point field goals attempted (93), free throws made (54), free throws attempted (68), assists (61), steals (22) and points (269)—placed him on College Sports Madness’ Second Team All-SoCon. He began league play with a 21-point, nine-rebound, six-assist outing against Chattanooga, playing all 40 minutes of the game, marking the first of a career-long eight-game double-digit scoring streak. Moore was named SoCon Player of the Week for Feb. 17 with a stretch that included a 22-point, six-rebound and four assist game against Furman and a career-high 35 points against Davidson, where he finished 11-of-19 from the field. The season culminated when he became the first Cadet since J’Mel Everhart to earn All-Tournament team honors. Moore came through with a team-high 24 points in back-to-back games against UNCG and Wofford, closing the 2014 SoCon Tournament by hitting 15 of 38 (.395) from the field, 6 of 13 (462) from 3-point range and 12 of 14 (.857) at the free throw line to go along with eight assists and five rebounds.

Entering the final month of Southern Conference play, shooting guard Ashton Moore has proved to be the offensive juggernaut for The Citadel by leading the team in minutes (745), field goals made (118), field goals attempted (286), 3-point field goals made (56), 3-point field goals attempted (146), steals (17), points (360) and points per game (18.0). He reached these team marks while carrying a 3.0 GPA in the 2014 fall semester, taking 21 credit hours. Moore has topped the 20-point mark on nine occasions this current season including a single-game high 29 points, scoring 21 in the second half, in a three-point home victory over 2014 NCAA Tournament participant Wofford. Moore capped off his season-high in points by virtue of hitting 10-of-17 from the floor and 6-of-10 from 3-point range. The 10 field goals are one off his career-high set during a career-best 35-point performance against Davidson a season ago, while the six 3-pointers are the most since he knocked down a career-best seven against Virginia Tech on Dec. 20.  His best non-conference performance of the season came at ACC foe Virginia Tech in late December. Moore capped off his afternoon by finishing 8-of-22 from the field and 7-of-15 from 3-point range. The Suffolk, Va., native became the first player since Zach Urbanus (Chattanooga, Feb. 6, 2010) to hit seven treys for the Cadets. He completed his performance by grabbing a game-high eight boards, one shy of his career high.
