Classroom

Avery Acker was a member of the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America Team. She has a 3.95 GPA and is majoring in accounting with minors in biological sciences and chemistry. Acker has been on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and Dean’s List in five of six academic semesters and was selected to the conference All-Academic team twice (freshman not eligible). Named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team in 2013, she earned the conference Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award in volleyball for academic credentials, athletic accolades and volunteer service.

Character

Acker has been elected as a team captain three times and sets an example for other players with her attitude and work ethic on and off the court. She mentors younger players, especially setters, teaching them the game and how to properly represent the program and the university. She also was honored with the Mustang Award, which goes to the player who best demonstrates dedication, desire and determination on and off the court.

Community

Acker serves on the FCA Leadership Team and works with Highland Park Methodist Church doing community service projects, including numerous hours serving the homeless. She also is active in volleyball clinics for younger athletes.

Competition

Acker finished the 2014 season ranked fourth in the NCAA with an American Athletic Conference record 1,413 assists and was named an All-America Honorable Mention honoree in 2013 and 2014. She was named to the AVCA All-Southeast Region team in 2013 and 2014 and was the 2013 American Athletic Conference Setter of the Year. She had a league-high 26 double-doubles last season, recording 403 digs and has been a first-team All-Conference selection twice. Acker has 2,839 career assists, eclipsing 1,000 in each of the last two seasons. As a team, SMU went 48-15 over the last two seasons with her as the setter.
