Bates was a member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. To make the Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a grade point average of at least 3.0 and pass at least 12 units.
Bates has been the iron woman of the Bruins over the last three seasons, having played in 171 of a possible 172 games. Her batting average, home runs, runs batted in, doubles, slugging and on base totals have gone up each year, while her strikeout total has gone down.
Bates has volunteered for Marathon Kids (a non-profit organization that targets children most vulnerable to childhood obesity and Type 2 diabetes), Dribble for the Cure and Mattel Children’s Hospital. She has also worked at the Northshore softball clinic and the Wooden Athletic Fund.
Bates is a two-time All-Pac-10/12 honoree, earning first team honors in 2012 and Honorable Mention accolades in 2011. She was also named Second Team NFCA All-West Region in 2012. As a junior, she was second on the squad with 48 runs batted in, third with 14 home runs and fourth with a .360 batting average. Bates was also third last year in slugging (.686), total bases (118), doubles (12), walks (27) and stolen bases (7), and fourth in hits (62) and runs scored (42). She led the team with nine game-winning RBI and was second with 14 multiple-RBI games.
