Classroom

Phipps exemplifies what a student-athlete should be, working hard to succeed both on and off the field. He will graduate from Maryland with a bachelor’s degree in history with a cumulative grade point average of 3.311, while consistently taking some of the hardest classes in his major.

Character

A leader both on and off the field, Phipps was selected to be a 2010 team captain by a vote of his teammates. Phipps was forced into a starting role as a freshman in 2007 due to injuries to two upperclass teammates and was named the ACC Freshman of the Year, while helping the Terps reach the NCAA Tournament. With his credentials firmly established as one of the nation’s premiere goalies, Phipps selflessly agreed to split time with fellow goalie Jason Carter for two seasons. The goalie rotation could have caused friction on some teams with some student-athletes, but Phipps and Carter became each other’s biggest fans, encouraging each other and pushing each other to become better. For his selfless contributions to the team, Phipps, along with Carter, was awarded the team’s Daniel Slafkosky Coaches’ Award at the team’s annual awards banquet. Phipps is returning from his third major knee surgery after suffering a torn ACL in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament. In addition to tireless rehabilitation during the fall, Phipps took the Terps’ trio of young goalies helped coach them and pushed them to improve their skills.

Community

As a Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) representative, Phipps is in charge of organizing and recording community service events and hours for lacrosse team. He is also involved with numerous youth lacrosse clubs and clinics and intends on pursuing a coaching career upon completing his college career.
