Carlos Ruiz

Classroom

Carlos Ruiz graduated in May 2016 with 3.5 GPA and is currently enrolled in the MBA program. He was named to the America East All-Academic Team in 2014 and the dean’s list for four semesters after transferring in 2013.

Character

Ruiz was named team captain for his final two seasons and has a robust work ethic. He is a bilingual learner along with being very humble and dedicated. He’s always open to helping others and keeps a positive attitude and embraces every task.

Community

Ruiz is very active in church and in the community, and as team captain in 2015 started team prayer sessions. He attends Bible study at Lowell and goes back to East Boston for church services. While transferring to UMass Lowell from BU, his mom was diagnosed with colon cancer and couldn’t afford summer classes after staying home and helping the family. Ruiz chose to volunteer at St. Patrick’s Elementary (painting and maintaining) through a Loomis Sayles internship.

Competition

Through mid-September, Ruiz has 43 starts in 48 appearances along with six goals and seven assists for 19 career points (2 G, 3 A in 2016). He set career highs with three goals and three assists in 2014. Recently, Ruiz had two assists on 9/14/16 in a 2-1 win against Brown and scored the game-tying goal on 9/17/16 against Brown. So far, Ruiz is 2-2 on PKs this season and 4-5 for his career. He was named to America East All-Conference First Team and All-Academic Team in 2014.
