Chandler Howard is consummate student-athlete. Similar to her work ethic on the field, her commitment to learning has proven to be a success in the classroom. The psychology major entered Rutgers as a good student, but has now transformed into an excellent student. She has been accepted into the five-year Special Elementary Education graduate program at Rutgers, and she aspires to one day become an elementary school teacher.
In regards to the team’s academic standing, Howard’s academic performance has contributed to the program’s recognition as an All-Academic Team and to a 1000 Academic Progress Rate (APR) in 2012-13. In the 2012-13 season, Howard also aided the Scarlet Knights in earning the Big East Team Academic Excellence Award.

Character

The two words that describe Chandler Howard the best are committed and compassionate. When she becomes invested in something, she commits to it fully and works towards the goal rapidly. She never lets up on a challenge, not only in training, but also in the heat of the game. Her passion for softball, her teammates and her school work defines her. Howard is one of the main team leaders, encouraging her teammates, especially the rookies who are adjusting to their new life at the collegiate level.

Community

Howard is an avid supporter of community service efforts of the Rutgers athletics. Most recently, Howard participated in the Rutgers athletics toy drive, in which the student-athletes delivered gifts to kids around the area during the holidays. She enjoys the team’s annual trip to Elijah’s promise, where the team assists in the soup kitchen. Howard also has participated annually with Rutgers softball in Big Chill 5K, a charity race that is a large toy drive for needy children around the holidays.

Competition

Chandler Howard was a key component to Rutgers historic 2014 season. Howard was named to the NFCA Division I All-Mideast Region First Team and All-American Athletic Conference Second Team after hitting .389 with a team-leading 63 hits, 29 RBIs, nine doubles and nine home runs. Her 63 hits were the third-most in a single-season school history, while her nine home runs have tied her for fourth all-time on the single season list. In 2014, Howard also registered a pair of long hitting streaks, including spans of 12 and 13 games. Howard is also well on her way to breaking into the top 10 of various career batting categories in the Rutgers record books.
