Genoway has logged more than 23 hours of community service over the past year.  He regularly reads to area school children and has served as an instructor at several youth hockey clinics.  In addition, Genoway has assisted UND freshmen moving into dormitories through UND’s Adopt-a-Residence Hall program.  He has appeared at Sioux Kids Club movie night and at UND’s Pucks for Plates function, benefitting the Northlands Rescue Mission.  Genoway has lent his time to Sioux Fan Fest and UND’s cross-state summer Sioux Caravan in 2009.  As part of the caravan, he traveled for autograph sessions as well as meet-and-greets. Genoway also assisted in cleanup efforts after the rural town of Northwood, North Dakota, was devastated by a tornado in the summer of 2008.

Competition

A preseason All-American selection heading into this season, Genoway earned 2009 AHCA All-America second team honors and was named to his second straight All-College Hockey News second team.  He was named the 2009 WCHA Defensive Player of the Year to go along with his 2009 All-WCHA first-team selection.  Genoway is on the verge of becoming just the 11th defenseman in UND history to score 100 career points.  He leads all active WCHA defensemen with 80 career points.  During his junior season, Genoway scored a career-high 32 points, which has helped him become one of the most dynamic defenseman in the country.  Genoway is tied for 12th nationally in points per game among defensemen (0.78) and ranks 24th overall in assists per game (0.71).  In addition, he is tied for sixth in the WCHA in assists and ranks sixth in points among defensemen.  He enjoyed a four-assist, five-point game in his team’s 7-3 victory over No. 12 Cornell (November 28, 2008), which were career highs in both statistical categories.  Genoway scored the game-winning goal against Cornell as well.  That five-point game was the first by a Sioux defenseman since Travis Roche recorded six on November 10, 2000 against Minnesota.  Another impressive feat, Genoway matched his career-long point streak when he reached the score sheet in six straight games from Nov. 21 to Dec. 6.  He amassed two goals and nine assists during that stretch.  Genoway has recorded seven multi-point games and has scored or assisted on seven game-winning goals (2 goals, 5 assists), which is second most on the team.  Genoway scored the overtime winner in the 2-1 win at Alaska Anchorage on February 20th, thus helping him earn his third letter after the 2008-09 campaign.  Additionally, Genoway was a 2007-08 All-College Hockey News and All-WCHA second team selection.  He was name to the 2008 NCAA Midwest Region all-tournament team and ranked second among WCHA defensemen in scoring.  He was named UND’s Rookie of the Year in 2006-07.
