Classroom

Chay Genoway entered his senior season with a 3.51 GPA, and logged a perfect 4.0 in Fall 2010 after returning from post-concussion syndrome. In February 2011, Genoway became only the second four-time WCHA Scholar-Athlete in WCHA history. He is a three-time All-WCHA Academic Team selection, as well as 2008-09 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American. Genoway is the first three-time recipient of UND’s Archie Krum Memorial Scholarship given to the player who “demonstrates leadership qualities, high academic standards and athletic excellence.” He received UND’s John H. and Jean C. O’Keefe Hockey Scholarship Endowment last season and this year he’s been honored with both the Mikkelson Impact Scholarship and the Engelstad Family Foundation Endowment.

Character

Genoway returns for his second year as team captain after missing all but nine games last year due to post-concussion syndrome. A free agent highly coveted by NHL teams, Genoway has turned down professional offers in each of the last two offseasons to return to UND to complete his degree and fulfill his eligibility. He was voted to All-WCHA third team by league coaches and media last season despite playing in only nine games. In 2008-09, Genoway received UND’s Cliff “Fido” Purpur Award as the player who “demonstrates hard work, determination and being a creator of excitement on the ice.”

Community

An extremely active student-athlete within the community, Genoway has already logged a team-leading 70+ hours of community service during the 2010-11 season alone. In the past year, Genoway has given his time to numerous organizations including: area elementary schools (reading to children), Special Olympics, Lewis and Clark Elementary School (classroom helper), the Grand Forks Park District (Sioux Skills Challenge), East Grand Forks High School (Captain’s Council), Pucks for Plates, Adopt-a-Residence Hall, Sioux Kids Club Party, UND Foundation Donor Social, Fighting Sioux Club Hockey Insider Day, Sioux Fan Fest and more. He also spearheaded the UND men’s Hockey “Movember” campaign which raised more than $2,000 in less than two weeks for cancer research. Genoway is also currently working with UND’s marketing department to become significantly involved with a children’s hospital.

Competition

A candidate for the Hobey Baker Award, Genoway has been honored as a three-time All-WCHA selection. He was the 2009 WCHA Defensive Player of the Year and an AHCA All-American. Also named to second straight All-College Hockey News second team in 2008-09. Genoway leads all active WCHA defensemen with 90 career points and is on the verge of becoming only the ninth UND defenseman in school history to score 100 career points. He’s UND’s active leader in points, assists and games played.
