Classroom

Summers is a psychology major at the University of Michigan.  In addition to his studies in the classroom, he has shown an interest in and an aptitude for on-camera television talent.  Summers has served as an anchor/host for a variety of pieces on MGoBlue.com.

Character

Summers has been well- liked by his teammates since he stepped on campus as a freshman.  Not only has he shown great maturity in both public and private scenes, but he also knows when the time is right to enjoy himself as he owns a great sense of humor.  As a junior, Summers was set to be an alternate captain but was thrust into the captaincy just a few days into the season when the captain suffered a season-ending injury.  He did an excellent job stepping up on the ice (posting career-high stats), in the locker room (the team finished second in the league) and in the public (never shying away from the media when the team was struggling).

Community

Summers has consistently contributed to team efforts of visiting children at Mott Children’s Hospital and working with Habitat for Humanity.  He serves his fellow student-athletes on campus by working on the grounds crew for baseball and softball games and even substituting as a PA announcer when necessary.

Competition

Summers will be the University of Michigan’s number one defenseman in 2009-10.  As previously mentioned, he became Michigan’s number one defenseman a year ago when then captain, Mark Mitera, was severely injured in the first game of the season.  He generated a near immediate impact and excelled in all situations—even strength, power play and penalty kill.  Summers eventually earned All-CCHA honorable mention and was a semifinalist for the CCHA Best Defensive Defenseman award.  He set single-season highs for points (17) and assists (13).
