Courtney Shaw has a concentration in Economics and minors in business management and Medieval and Renaissance Studies. Also proficient in French, she has made the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Academic Team and Dean’s List the past four semesters. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale. She is currently in the honors program and Dean’s Circle. Recently Shaw has also studied abroad in Lorenzo de’ Medici, Italy in May 2015.

Character

As one of two seniors on the Marist volleyball team in 2015, Shaw was selected as a captain by a team vote. She will serve as a volleyball representative on Marist College’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee for the second straight year. SAAC serves as a vehicle to promote communication between the athletic administration and student-athletes at Marist by providing a student-athlete voice within the department, discussing issues and concerns and providing feedback as necessary.

Community

Dedicated to serving the Marist College community, Shaw helps people in need. As a member of Campus Ministry she was selected for the 2014 Global Outreach service trip in Merida, Mexicon to volunteer at the town’s community center. In the U.S., she participated in the Lazarus House community service trip volunteering at a shelter that houses homeless families living in poverty regain their dignity and become self-sufficient members of the community. She is the community service chairman of L.E.A.P. (Ladies Empowering Athletics Program) and a member of the Emerging Leaders Program on campus. Shaw also has volunteered her time and talent annually for the Girl Scouts Sports Clinic, Giving Tree and Hunger Walk at Marist.

Competition

Most recently, Shaw was named 2015 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Co-Preseason Player of the Year. She was also Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Female Student-Athlete of the Week for Sept. 7. She made an impact early in her sophomore year, earning a spot on the Volley in The Valley All-Tournament Team. Shaw was named to the All-MAAC Second Team after finishing seventh in the conference in hitting percentage (.270) and second on the Red Foxes in kills (284), blocks (.75 per set) and points (2.99 per set) in 2013. She continued to dominate the tournament scene in 2014, picking up the Most Valuable Player award at the Boston College Invitational Tournament and Crosstown Tournament to begin the season. A two-time MAAC Player of the Week that season, Shaw started all 31 matches and played in all 112 sets for the Red Foxes. She finished the year with a team-high 316 kills, tallying double-digit totals in that category in Marist’s last six matches to earn a spot on the MAAC All-Championship Team.
