Character

Lighty has had to battle back from multiple injuries in his career. He suffered a left foot injury and had surgery to repair a fracture that forced him to miss the 2008-09 season. After a healthy junior season, Lighty re-injured the foot in May 2010 and had another surgery, but he has since returned to full practice with the team. “(David) came to the athletic training room with a smile on his face despite frustration with his injuries. His positive attitude was contagious and was an aid in helping other athletes overcome his/her own injury issues,” team athletic trainer Vince O’Brien said.

Community

Lighty has been involved with many community events during his five years at Ohio State. Working each year with the organization “A Kid Again,” Lighty has provided an outlet for children with life threatening illnesses to forget about their ailments and be a “Buckeye for a Day” and participate in basketball drills and games. In addition, Lighty has made numerous appearances for local youth groups and schools to discuss how to be successful in the classroom and in life.

Competition

In his junior season, Lighty averaged 12.6 points per game and earned third-team All-Big Ten honors from the media and honorable mention accolades by the Big Ten coaches. He also led the team in steals (58), which ranked seventh in the conference. Lighty’s on pace to become the Buckeyes’ all-time leader in games played and victories.
