Character

It has been a pleasure and a privilege to coach Desure Buie for the past 5 years. A very influential teacher in my life shared a poem about being a teacher once with us.  There was a line in the poem that went like this; “By your pupils you’ll be taught.” That line has stuck with me my entire life and no player that I’ve coached has “taught me” more than Desure. Great leaders get other people “to be who they want them to be.” Desure is a powerful leader. He communicates, motivates and leads his teammates like no other. He demands excellence of himself and inspires others to be excellent as well. He does this both on and off the floor.

He cares about people, which is a quality many people just do not have! This example is worth sharing: Desure became aware of a fellow student-athlete who was suicidal. This student athlete shared his story in an athletic department setting in front of 350 other students. When the student-athlete finished his story, Desure got up and crossed the room and gave this kid a hug. When asked by the person leading the topic if he knew the student before he answered “no, but we are going to be friends now.” Desure is on track to get a master’s degree coming from a family where no one went to college. He is loved by all and he is what is right about of college athletics. He impacts us all daily.

Community

Buie has done extensive community service. He has lent his time at the Barry & Florence Friedberg Jewish Community Center Oceanside JCC (clinic), Glen Cove Child Day Care Center (working with kids), Hofstra Move-In Day, Yards for Yeardley, Nassau Kings (clinic), St. Joseph’s Elementary School, North Bellmore Elementary School, California Elementary School, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island and various food drives.
