Devin Brown currently holds a 3.376 cumulative grade-point average entering her senior season. Last season, she was selected to the Sun Belt Conference Academic Honor Roll after being named to the league’s Commissioner’s List each of her first two academic years. She is also a two-time NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete selection and has been named to South Alabama’s Dean’s List on four occasions.

Character

During her freshman season, Brown saw limited action after suffering an injury in the middle of season, but she still managed to finish among the top three in the league in opposing batting average, strikeouts and strikeouts looking. She battled back from the injury that season and was in the circle when the Jaguars won their third Sun Belt Conference title, defeating Louisiana as she scattered five hits in seven innings of relief to pick up a 2-0 victory over the Ragin’ Cajuns. Following her freshman season, she established herself as not only the top pitcher on the Jaguar staff , but also the conference. She has always been a pitcher the team can count on in the circle during any situation.

Community

During her time as a Jaguar, Brown has also contributed to a number of different organizations in the community. Each of the last four seasons, she has served meals to residents at the Ronald McDonald House. She has also participated in Operation Christmas Child each of the last three years, wrapping presents for children around the work of Christmas. During her junior season, she participated with Lace Up, which helps raise awareness for pediatric cancer. This year, she has volunteered with South Alabama’s move-in day for new students and the International Coastal Clean Up, which picks up trash along the gulf coast beaches.

Competition

Brown entered 2018 looking to close out her collegiate career with many individual career marks at South, as she currently ranks first in strikeouts per seven innings (9.71); second in lowest opponent’s batting average (.174), strikeouts (701) and shutouts (26); and third in complete games (52) and innings pitched (505.1). This season she was named preseason All-Sun Belt for the third-straight season after picking up first-team All-League honors for the second consecutive season last year.

Last season, Brown ranked second in the SBC in ERA (1.51) and strikeouts (194), while her .184 opposing batting average was lowest in the league. She led the SBC in fewest runs allowed (44), and her 39 earned runs allowed were the second fewest in the conference. She also ranked among the NCAA leaders in fewest hits allowed (28th), ERA (30th), strikeouts (34th) and strikeouts per seven innings (44th). Her 12 shutouts last season were fourth-most in the NCAA and also set a new single-season program mark. She also moved past former Jag All-American Hannah Campbell for second place on the program’s all-time strikeout list and became just the second pitcher to eclipse the 700-strikeout mark. Entering the season, she was just 34 strike outs behind Beth Pilgrim for the program’s all-time mark. During her career, she has also been named SBC Pitcher of the Week 11 times. Last year, she was named to two preseason All-America teams and to Justin’s World of Softball Top-50 Watch List.
