Simpson boasts a 3.725 cumulative GPA in managerial finance and corporate accounting. He is both a two-time WCHA Scholar-Athlete and a two-time All-WCHA Academic Team selection. Simpson was also the recipient of UND’s Rick & Lori Lee Impact Scholarship as a junior and sophomore.

Character

Simpson was named team captain prior to the 2013-14 season despite being only the 15th-oldest player on UND’s 26-man roster. In fact, Simpson is UND’s youngest captain in more than 20 years and is the 10th-youngest team captain in program history. He displays a maturity, on and off the ice, that belies his age. Shortly after Simpson was named captain, head coach Dave Hakstol said, “He is a guy who, as a 20-year old, has gained the respect of his teammates by going about his business the right way on a daily basis in all areas.”

An affable, positive young man, Simpson is one of the team’s most popular players among fans and media, and is frequently asked to serve as a guest speaker at various Athletics and University events. As a senior, he continues to serve as the team’s representative on UND’s SAAC committee, a position he also held as a freshman.

Community

One of UND’s most active student-athletes in terms of community service, Simpson has already given his time to 31 community service events as of October 2013.

Organizations for which Dillon has volunteered include, but are not limited to: Special Olympics, Northlands Rescue Mission, Greater Grand Forks Senior Center, Grand Forks Public Library, Grand Forks Park District, Empire Arts Center, Department of Transportation (anti-drunk driving campaign) and numerous area elementary schools.

This past fall he also assisted with the UND Residence Halls “Hall Move-In Day,” helping new freshman students move into their dorms.

Competition

One of the top two-way defensemen in all of college hockey, Simpson was named to the College Hockey News 2013-14 Preseason All-CHN Second Team.

Simpson was named UND’s Most Improved Player last season after leading the team’s defensemen with a career-high five goals and 19 assists in 42 games. He ranked sixth among WCHA defensemen in assists while establishing a career-high with 24 points. He also led all WCHA defensemen in scoring during the first round of the conference playoffs.

Simpson is a National Hockey League prospect, having been drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the fourth round (92nd overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
