Character

“As the head basketball coach at SDSU, I have enjoyed working with Ellie Thompson as a member of our team. Throughout her career, Thompson has demonstrated several high character qualities that positively affect our program. Her teammates and coaches voted her one of our team captains. Choosing captains is a process we take seriously, and it is a testament to her character that her peers entrusted her with this critical role. Thompson has a very pleasant and engaging personality which helps her impact her peers in a positive manner.

“She has a tremendous work ethic on the court, in the classroom and with various jobs she has held. This past summer she fully participated in our basketball activities, completed a full-time internship and worked a few side jobs that would help provide experience in her chosen career field. That summer schedule would be overwhelming for many of our student-athletes, but Thompson’s tremendous character provided excellent skills to help her manage her time and responsibilities.

“We have a very passionate and engaged fan base at SDSU, and our fans love to visit with and get to know our student-athletes. Thompson is always approachable and willing to take extra time out of her day to connect with people in our community. Selflessness is a great word that ties to character, and Thompson is incredibly selfless with her time and energy as a role model in our community.” - SDSU Head Coach Aaron Johnston

Community

Thompson has been part of community service with the SDSU women’s basketball program since stepping on the Brookings campus. She has volunteered with many different community organizations and events in the area, including SDSU Library Book Move, BYCMP Dinner, Read for the Record, United Way 2-1-1 Program, Adopt-a-Family, Habitat for Humanity Re-Store, Dakota Prairie “Prairie Fest,” Operation Christmas Child and visiting hospitals, nursing homes and elementary schools.

Competition

On a team that has four of its five starters averaging double digits in points the last three years, Thompson has been a mainstay in the SDSU lineup. She will join an impressive group of former Jackrabbit greats as a 1,000-point scorer, and has collected more than 580 career rebounds and will finish her collegiate career in the top 10 in career block average. Thompson has started 77-straight games and all 99 games in her career. She has 10 or more points in 53 games, including 10 double-doubles. The Chaska, Minnesota, native is a two-time All-Summit League Second Team selection and was named to the league’s all-newcomer team and to the 2015 Summit League All-Tournament team. Additionally, she is a three-time preseason all-league pick. Thompson helped the Jackrabbits to a pair of Summit League Tournament titles and two trips to the NCAA Tournament, including a second-round appearance. The Jacks are 74-25 as a team with Thompson.
