Classroom

Buckley has maintained a 3.84 grade point average while majoring in English in the honors B.A./M.A. five-year graduate program. He is also a government and politics minor and plans to attend law school. Buckley has named to the school’s Dean List as well as the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll every year he has been enrolled. Named to the ECAC All-Academic Team after both his sophomore and junior years, he posted the second-best GPA in the entire conference in 2009. Buckley is a member of the Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society and was tabbed for the Phi Eta Sigma National Freshmen Honor Society.

Character

In his four years at St. John’s, Buckley has proved the strong example of leadership and high character. He is one of only a handful of student-athletes to be inducted into the prestigious President’s Society, which honors students who combine scholarship, integrity, and maturity with leadership skills demonstrated by their significant contribution to the extracurricular life of the University. Buckley represented all of his fellow-student athletes in the University’s NCAA Certification process, serving on the Steering Committee as well as the Subcommittee for Gender/Diversity Issues and Student-Athlete Welfare. Buckley also worked as an orientation leader for new student-athletes and a peer educator in the Student Development 101 program. Playing goalkeeper since his freshman year, Buckley has always been one of the most vocal leaders of his team and was voted team captain for the 2010 season. “There is not a better role model in our program, and perhaps college lacrosse as a whole, than Gavin Buckley,” St. John’s head coach Jason Miller said. “He is the first in line for any community service opportunity, and often participates at the invitation of those not affiliated with our lacrosse program. I’m not sure it’s possible to get more out of your college experience than Gavin is getting, and I’m also not sure it’s possible for a University to get more out of a student than St. John’s gets out of Gavin Buckley.”

Community

Buckley is a four-year participant in the school-wide University Service Day, serving in day-long community service projects at various locations in the community. This past November, he worked at the St. Nicholas Men’s Homeless Shelter cooking and serving food for homeless men in Tolentine Parish. In 2008, Buckley did landscaping for the Floral Park Conservation Society and served with the non-profit Hour Children organization which focuses on the care of children of incarcerated women. Buckley also participated in the Breast Cancer Awareness Fun Run and Catholic Charities Food Drive his freshman year.

Competition

Buckley ranks eighth all-time in Red Storm history in saves (220) while posting a career save percentage of .460. He started every game in 2009 as he earned ECAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for saving 15 shots in St. John’s upset of fifth-ranked Georgetown. The goalie led St. John’s to a 5-1 start on the season and a No. 15 ranking in the USILA Coaches Poll. Buckley was an ECAC weekly honoree three times during his junior season. Buckley was named ECAC Defensive Player of the Week for his 11 saves against Penn State his sophomore year, making him the only non-senior on the team to earn ECAC weekly honors that season.
