Jamie Phillips currently holds a 3.46 cumulative GPA. He’s been a member of the WCHA All-Academic Team each of the last two seasons (2013-14, 2014-15) and is on pace to achieve that again this year.

Character

Phillips is a leader on the hockey team and throughout the Michigan Tech community. Even though he’s a nationally recognized Division I athlete, Phillips doesn’t act better than anyone and puts his teammates and classmates first. An obvious leader in the locker room, Phillips is a quiet player who leads by example, whether that’s on the ice during games and practices, off the ice in the weight room or in the study lounge. He is enthusiastic but remains calm, a trait that is obviously important for a goaltender. Perhaps the best part of his character is his humility. As an athlete who has accomplished so much, both individually and for the program, Phillips is kind and quick to distribute credit when he’s talking to the media, fans, the bus drivers or random people who stop him in the street. Without a doubt, Phillips has high integrity, determination and enthusiasm.

Community

Phillips is actively involved around Michigan Tech and the Houghton community. As a member of the hockey team, he’s visited classrooms around the area to meet kids, sign autographs and spend time in the schools. He’s also taken part in Tech’s youth hockey activities, such as hosting youth clinics or inviting local hockey teams to watch practices and games. His most interesting community activity is his involvement with a local gymnastics program. As a volunteer assistant, Phillips helps coach and is a huge part in giving the kids advice on how to use flexibility to maximize the effectiveness of movements.

Competition

Phillips is the goalie of record in all 13 of Michigan Tech’s wins this season so far (through Jan. 25) and has posted a .918 save percentage and 2.09 goals against average. His shutout of nationally ranked Bowling Green on Nov. 13 was the eighth of his career and set the all-time school mark. Phillips has three WCHA Defensive Player of the Week selections so far this season, is on the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Fan Ballot and was a preseason All-WCHA selection.
