Classroom

Hazell is a social sciences major with a minor in criminal justice. After a difficult start to his collegiate experience, he has grown significantly to become one of the academic leaders on the Seton Hall men’s basketball team. A highly punctual individual, Hazell is ahead of schedule to graduate in May of 2011.  With career aspirations that include both professional basketball and law enforcement, Hazell has learned that hard work, practice and determination can prove to be as beneficial in the classroom as they are on the basketball court.

Character

A leader on the men’s basketball team and across campus, Hazell is a two-time team captain. On several occasions, Hazell has proven his ability to remain positive and lead the team through often difficult times. In this past year alone, he assisted his teammates in dealing with a head coaching change, a near-death and hospitalization of a teammate and the death of a classmate due to an off-campus shooting, which also injured a women’s basketball player. Through this all, Hazell has remained the steadfast captain on which his team has leaned. He has wonderful relationships with his professors and athletic administration and continually shows a willingness to want to help people. Hazell has attended several leadership and service workshops, including one held by the president of the National Urban League.

Community

Throughout his career at Seton Hall, Hazell has been a force in the campus and local communities. On campus, he regularly supports his fellow student-athletes at baseball, soccer and volleyball games. At several men’s basketball “Meet the Team” or season ticket-holder events, Hazell spends hours meeting fans and signing autographs for youth. Devoted to assisting those who are less fortunate, he is a regular volunteer at a local food bank in Hillside, N.J., and makes appearances at the Newark Boys & Girls Club as well as the Children’s Specialized Hospital of Mountainside. Hazell is also a large contributor to Seton Hall’s Pen Pal Day when seventh graders from local schools visit Seton Hall to learn about the importance of college and meet the student-athletes with whom they’ve been communicating.

Competition

Hazell enters his senior year as a preseason All-Big East first team selection as well as a member of the preseason Wooden Award watch list. A two-time All-Big East selection, he’s the Big East’s active leader in points, scoring average, made three-pointers and steals. Hazell, who has scored 1,789 career points, has a chance this season to break Seton Hall’s all-time scoring mark of 2,494 career points.
