Classroom
Gustafsson is a 2008 ESPN The Magazine second team All-District selection and a 2008 NSCAA first team Scholar All-East Region honoree. A philosophy with a 3.40 grade point average, Gustafsson was named to the Dean’s List for the 2007-08 academic year.
Character
According to head coach Dr. Dave Masur: “Joel is a consummate vocal leader both on game day and on the practice field. He is always pushing himself and his teammates to the top level.”
Community
Gustafsson’s community activities include numerous appearances at and participation in the Relay For Life, the St. John’s Midnight Run, the St. John’s Blood Drive and Making Strides For Breast Cancer Walk.
Competition
Gustafsson, on the 2009 MAC Hermann Trophy watch list, was an NSCAA second team All-American in 2008 and NSCAA first team All-Region selection that year. He was named the 2008 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and was a first team All-BIG EAST selection after garnering All-BIG EAST honorable mention as a sophomore. He was selected to the TopDrawerSoccer.com All-Rookie first team in 2006 as a freshman. He has played in 62 career games (with 60 starts) and has tallied four goals and three assists.
