Classroom

Jonathan Gray is a two-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and is projected to graduate in the fall of 2015.

Character

Gray has been one of the team leaders since his arrival on campus in 2012. Despite being one of the more highly-recruited running backs in the nation, the senior has continually showed his unselfishness. Just this preseason, he volunteered to be a member of the punt coverage team. He also is slated to be one of the kickoff returners despite being expected to carry the load as the No. 1 tailback.

Community

Gray has been active in the program’s community service endeavors throughout his career. He is a regular on the team’s visits to Dell Children’s Medical Center. During the 2014-15 academic year, he participated in the flood cleanup in Wimberley, Texas, helped organize and run the UT Women’s Football Clinic, worked with 4th- through 8th-grade students to help build on their football skills at Junior Camp, and coached 4th- through 8th- grade children in football drills at East Austin Kid’s Clinic. During 2013-14, Gray spoke to his high school team (Aledo) about the importance of academics and athletics, volunteered with after-school programs and spoke about the importance of school to Trinity Episcopal School, visited Baylor Hospital, and took part in TexasTHON, a fundraiser for Dell Miracle Children’s Hospital. That year, he also participated in the “I’m Bully Free” event to discuss the importance of reducing bullying in the schools.

Competition

Gray is a fourth-year running back who has played in 35 career games with 13 starts. The top tailback on the roster, he ranks 15th on the UT all-time rushing list (2,118 yards) and has five career 100-yard rushing games. He became the 49th player in school history to eclipse 1,000 career rushing yards in the 2013 Kansas State game (Sept. 21) and was the 18th performer in school history to eclipse 2,000 career rushing yards in the 2014 West Virginia game (Nov. 8). He missed the last four games of the 2013 season due to an Achilles injury and didn’t get back to form until late in 2014. Gray was named a candidate for the 2014 and 2015 Doak Walker Award and also is on the watch list for the 2015 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award and was a member of the watch list for the 2014 Maxwell Award. He began the 2012 season as a reserve but ended up starting five of the last six games en route to All-Big 12 honors. Gray’s 701 rushing yards in 2012 rank No. 9 on the UT freshman single-season list.
