Jonquel Jones boasts a 3.07 grade-point average as a criminal justice major. She was recognized on the GW Athletics Academic Dean’s List for the Fall 2014 semester and on the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the Fall 2013 semester.

Character

Jones is a Legacy Leader in GW Athletics’ Leadership Academy. In addition, while the women’s basketball team does not pick captains, she is a member of the team’s leadership council, which performs responsibilities normally handled by captains. Finally, Jones is one of the most popular figures not just in the athletics department but on GW’s campus. She can be seen at most home sporting events supporting her fellow Colonials.

Community

Jones, along with her teammates, has visited a number of local elementary schools to talk to the students about what it takes to be a Division I student-athlete. She also participated in a canned food drive and helped deliver the collection to the food bank, and she helped prepare meals at a homeless shelter. Finally she, along with her teammates, hosted a youth clinic for the children in Jones’ hometown of Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, during the team’s Thanksgiving tournament last fall.

Competition

This year, Jones is averaging 16.0 points per game (fourth in A-10) and 14.7 rebounds per game (1st in NCAA) as the only player in the conference to average a double-double on the year. She has posted a league-high 17 double-doubles in 21 games played this season. Jonquel was named to the A-10 All-Conference Second Team and All-Defensive Team, earning the honors despite missing 10 conference games with injury. The 2015 Atlantic 10 Player and Defensive Player of the Year, Jones was named an honorable mention All-American by the Associated Press and WBCA and was one of 30 midseason candidates for the prestigious Naismith Trophy. Jones was the only player in the A-10 to average a double-double last season, leading the league and ranking sixth nationally in rebounding (12.5 rpg) while ranking sixth in the conference in scoring (15.3 ppg), fourth in blocks (1.9 bpg) and 10th in field goal percentage (.478). A seven-time A-10 Player of the Week in 2014-15, Jones posted a league-best 20 double-doubles, 10th-most in the NCAA. She set a school record with 375 rebounds on the year, shattering the previous mark, which stood for more than two decades. Jones will enter her senior year ranked ninth all-time at GW with 102 blocks and 15th with 625 boards in two seasons wearing the Buff and Blue. Jones was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Atlantic 10 Championship after leading No. 19/25 GW (29-4, 15-1 A-10) to their first A-10 title since 2003. The Colonials also won the league’s regular-season crown, posted a program-record for wins and made their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2008. Jones’ long list of accolades also includes MVP honors at the Junkanoo Jam as GW won the tournament’s Freeport Division title, as well as team MVP and GW’s Outstanding Female Athlete. Additionally, she was named a first-team Preseason All-American this fall by Sporting News. Jones’ boasts career totals of 1,229 points, 1,028 rebounds and 188 blocks. Her career 12.4 rpg average ranks third among active Division I players, while her 53 career double-doubles rank fourth.
