Classroom

Kaitlyn Hickey is double majoring in accounting and finance while holding an impressive 3.70 GPA entering her senior season. She has been a two-time Academic All-Summit League selection, has been twice named a Summit League Academic Distinguished Scholar, and has been named to the IUPUI Academic Advisor’s List every semester of her college career. Additionally, in each of the past two seasons, Hickey has been selected for the Kelly School of Business Athletic Academic Achievement Award in both 2013-14 and 2014-15.

Character

Hickey is a leader for the Jaguars on and off the floor. Her work ethic is second to none, and there is a reason why she has had so much success on the floor and in the classroom. Hickey says, “I do not enjoy the feeling of failure. I hate losing, so I think that is where the determination and dedication come from—always trying to beat another obstacle or opponent.” Off the floor, Hickey says that not many of her teammates are majoring in business, but some are minoring in business, and if they are struggling, she is there to help them out. “I find time to help my teammates with the accounting concentrated courses because I enjoy being able to help others with these classes. It helps me understand the course material better and it makes me feel like a teacher, which I plan to become in the far future.”

Community

Throughout her career, Hickey has worked with the various groups: Mega Meal Madness, Heather’s Voice and Head Start. Mega Meal Madness helps prepare meals for Hungry Hoosiers. Heather’s Voice is an organization that raises awareness for domestic violence, and the Jags have helped raise funds for the organization in each the past three seasons. During her freshman season, Hickey started working with Head Start, which is an organization that tries to bring students and their families closer together by providing take-home packets and school supplies.

Competition

On the court, Hickey has been one of IUPUI’s go-to players since arriving on campus. As a junior, she was an American Volleyball Coaches honorable-mention All-American, and she is a three-time All-Summit League performer. As a freshman, she was also named the Summit League Freshman of the Year and was also a Summit League All-Freshman Team selection that season.

During her career, she has ranked in the top two on the team in kills in each of her first three seasons while helping the Jaguars claim at least a share of three straight Summit League regular-season titles. In 2013, she also led the Jaguars to their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance as IUPUI claimed its first Summit League Tournament crown. Hickey has already eclipsed 1,000 career kills and digs, and if she were to match her production from her first three years as a senior, she would become the first player in Summit League history to reach 1,500 career kills and 1,500 career digs. Finally, Hickey has on three occasions been named to the Summit League All-Tournament Team. Entering her senior season, Hickey is on pace to become IUPUI’s all-time career leader in kills and solo blocks.
