Classroom

Lange’s talents don’t stop on the softball field, as she has also found success in the classroom. The senior captain of the Crimson carries a 3.21 grade-point average as a Neurobiology concentrator. She helped Harvard earn team NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors in 2013, helping the Crimson claim the 19th-best team GPA in the country and second-best in the Ivy League. It marked the third time the team has earned the honor since her arrival in Cambridge.

Character

A lead-by-example personality, Lange has let her glove, bat and attitude do most of the talking through three years in Cambridge. “She is a defensive leader who plays the game with a Team First attitude,” says her head coach Jenny Allard. “Kasey has tremendous respect for her teammates, coaches and competitors.” Lange was elected captain by her peers for the 2013-14 season.

Community

Lange has done well to give back during her time with the Harvard softball team, staying involved with a number of community service initiatives. She has volunteered at a number of Harvard softball camps and clinics aimed to help develop players from grade school to high school. She is also takes time to assist with a self-defense program for at-risk girls in the Greater Boston area, and has joined with her teammates to be an active member in the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, a program that pairs children suffering from serious illnesses with local sports teams. Lange spent the summer of 2013 volunteering at the American Heart Association and the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center. With the former, she helped to coordinate their annual Heart Walk in Boston, and with the latter, she assisted in their emergency department.

Competition

Lange has been the offensive and defensive catalyst for Harvard in her three years with the team. A three-time unanimous first-team All-Ivy League selection, Lange took home unanimous Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors in 2011 and has been named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Region first team every year of competition. In her freshman and sophomore seasons, she helped the Crimson claim back-to-back Ivy League titles and saw the Crimson advance to the NCAA Regional Final in 2012 in Seattle, Washington. She has led the team in homeruns, slugging and RBI in every season with the squad, and has led the Crimson in runs scored the past two seasons as well. As a junior, she was named the team’s best defensive and offensive player and was nominated team captain for her senior season. She has received seven conference Player/Rookie of the Week awards in her tenure, and through her junior season, is the all-time program leader in slugging percentage (.712), doubles (48), homeruns (30) and RBI (148), and ranks within the top five in batting average, on base percentage, hits and total bases. Says her head coach Jenny Allard, “Kasey is one of the most competitive hitters in the history of Harvard Softball and in the Ivy League Conference.”
