Classroom

Katie Marino received NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors for each of her three completed seasons. She was named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll in 2017, 2018, and 2019. She was named to the ACC All-Academic Team in 2017 and 2019. She plans to attend medical school after graduation.

Character

Marino was selected as a team captain this season through a vote by teammates and has demonstrated leadership on and off the field.

“I’m so grateful and honored to be a captain for the Notre Dame softball team this year,” Marino exclaimed. “This team is so special and our goal as captains is to make every individual on the team realize this. Belief is contagious. As captains, we aim to hold this team to a standard that pushes us to achieve goals this organization hasn’t been able to reach yet.”

“This team and staff are my family, and I’m so excited to work hard and make the most out of my final semester at this University,” Marino added.

Community

Marino is Notre Dame Softball’s Community Service President. She serves as a substantial advocate for Fighting Irish Fighting for Life, a Notre Dame program that pairs local pediatric patients with athletic teams. They become honorary teammates and attend games and events with student-athletes.

Each season, the Notre Dame softball team hosts the Strike Out Cancer event, an entire weekend that benefits local South Bend pediatric patients battling illness. The weekend includes a full series of games, and team members also work multiple events for the fundraiser, including as servers for the annual trivia night. Some participate in cutting their hair to donate as part of the event as well.

Competition

Marino was named preseason First-Team All-ACC for the 2020 season. She was named Second-Team All-ACC and First-Team NFCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region in 2019, and also earned ACC Co-Player of the Week honors (March 5). In 2018, she ranked second on the Notre Dame roster with 27 RBI and 10 doubles, and third in home runs (6), 30 runs, and 72 total bases.
