Kelly Blumenschein carries a 3.72 cumulative GPA in the University of Dayton’s nationally-renowned entrepreneurship program, which was ranked No. 4 in the country by the Princeton Review. She was one of 30 students selected to the University of Dayton Flyer Enterprises Leadership Development Program where she created a comprehensive business plan for a hypothetical on-campus venture. She recently completed a one-year internship as an associate client services specialist at a non-profit organization in Dayton called Aileron. In this position, she assisted with marketing strategies, made sure inventory and marketing were accurate and in line with brand guidelines, operated in-house software to assist in day-to-day operational needs such as client registration, confirmations, and requests, re-wrote a campus brochure to streamline tour protocol, created a cost/benefit analysis to update and automate the inventory preparation process; and prepared expense reports. She also completed a summer marketing internship this year with promotional firm Shumsky Enterprises in Dayton. Here she took the initiative to create a new employee on-boarding process and worked with the marketing director. She worked full-time while balancing a summer online course at Sinclair Community College, playing soccer for Ohio Premier Elite (Women’s Premier Soccer League) and weight training at Dayton three times per week. She has also served as marketing manager for a micro-company called UD Beanie Co. Her marketing team, which won third place in the competition, was given $5,000 start-up capital from the university to develop and sell a product to UD students. She developed and implemented a viable business plan and marketing strategy with a focus on personal selling/advertising. In addition to pursuing degrees in both marketing and entrepreneurship, she earned a minor in Spanish culminating in a four-week program studying abroad in Costa Rica this summer. Blumenschein is a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Second Team selection and was one of 11 players named to the 2008 Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team. She is a three-time UD Scholar Athlete. In addition, she was named First Team Academic All-Ohio by the Ohio Soccer Coaches Association in 2008 and 2009. She has been named to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and UD Dean’s List for five semesters.

Character

Blumenschein is a two-time winner of the Stacey Martin Memorial Award, one of only two University of Dayton women’s soccer players to earn the honor twice. This award is voted on by teammates who select the player who has demonstrated qualities of leadership in elevating the women’s soccer program. The award is in honor of Stacey Martin, a former UD women’s soccer player who passed away March 28, 1998, during an exhibition match at Baujan Field. In her memory, the Flyers established the team leadership award in her name, and it is the most prestigious honor bestowed on a Flyer women’s soccer player. Blumenschein is also a two-time captain for the Flyer women’s soccer team – as a junior and now in her senior year. She was selected by UD Athletic Director Tim Wabler as the sole representative of Flyer student-athletes in a meeting with new Trustees at a University of Dayton Board of Trustees orientation session. Blumenschein has been an officer of the UD Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) since 2007, and in 2009 was one of two student-athletes selected to represent 340 athletes in discussions of issues affecting athletes. She serves on a board comprised of faculty, staff and community members. She attended the annual Atlantic 10 conference SAAC meeting in 2008. A member of Troop #1199, she was honored with the Girl Scout Gold Award in March of 2008. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award and the leadership skills, organizational skills and sense of community and commitment that come from “earning the Gold” set the foundation for a lifetime of active citizenship. After sponsoring a Youth Leadership Academy, Blumenschein was nominated for the National Young Women of Distinction Award (July 2008) and the Buckeye Trails Girl Scouts for Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award (Aug. 2007).

Community

Blumenschein volunteers for several organizations in the Dayton community and on campus. She is the community service vice president for the Delta Sigma Pi professional business fraternity. She has also volunteered for Dayton Saint Vincent DePaul facility for the homeless. She contributes her time to TOPS Soccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) which is a national soccer program created to train young people with disabilities in a caring coaching environment. By providing a community-based training and team placement program for young people with disabilities, any boy or girl, age five and up who has a mental or physical disability, will have the opportunity to learn and play soccer. She worked these camps in the fall of 2006 and 2007. Like so many UD student-athletes, Blumenschein is also involved in Christmas on Campus, which involves “adopting” a child to give them a better holiday. She has participated every year. During the summers of 2008 and 2009, she served as a coach and counselor at University of Dayton soccer clinics and Centerville United Soccer Association day camps. Every year (2008-2010) she has participated in the National Women and Girls in Sports Day, interacting and encouraging youth to become active in sports and she has also worked for the Huesman Healthy Heart Foundation and the Centerville Special Olympics Basketball program.

Competition

Blumenschein is a three-time Atlantic 10 all-conference selection and two-time captain. She started all 23 games her junior year and put up five goals and a career-high seven assists. She is the second leading returning scorer from the 2009 Dayton Flyer squad that posted an impressive 16-1-6 record including an undefeated mark in Atlantic 10 play (10-0-1). She helped UD win the Atlantic 10 regular-season and tournament titles and also earn a berth to the NCAA Tournament where Dayton advanced to the second round. She made an immediate impact for the Flyers, being named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team as a freshman.
