Classroom

Ball State midfielder Madison Oyer has excelled tremendously in the classroom as a family and consumer sciences major. Oyer owns a 3.24 GPA through her junior year. She was named to the Academic All-MAC Team as a junior in 2014 and was honored on the league’s Distinguished Scholar Athlete list. Oyer is a three-time member of the Dean’s List at Ball State University. She has a career goal to work in the fashion industry, preferably in the Midwest, and she gained experience with a summer internship at Cinda B, a fashion company in her hometown of Fort Wayne, Ind.

Character

Oyer sees one of her roles on the team as helping to build unity. While faith plays a large role in her life, she and a couple teammates lead an optional prayer before games. This year, she has seen tremendous growth in participation from a relatively small number of players to the entire team. Because of Ball State’s improvement as a program, Oyer has also found herself in a position of having to compete for her spot this year despite being a two-time all-conference performer. She has found it challenging to compete with some of her best friends for time on the playing field, but she says it has forced her to continually work at improving and has taught her to never settle. She knows the competition will make her and her teammates better as individuals, and will in turn make Ball State a better team.

Community

Oyer has found ways to be active in both the university’s community and in her hometown. She has volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club, working with children after school, and at a local senior health center, spending time with an Alzheimer’s patient. She has also volunteered with a Muncie animal shelter. She is active in church attendance both in Muncie and in her hometown of Fort Wayne. With her home church, she has helped with various food drives.

Competition

Oyer has played a major role in Ball State’s recent ascension in the Mid-American Conference. The former transfer from Memphis has been an All-MAC Second Team selection in each of her two seasons with the Cardinals. She has helped the team to back-to-back 11-win seasons, a championship game appearance in the 2013 MAC Tournament and a semifinal appearance on 2014. The 2015 Cardinals were picked as co-favorite in the MAC West Division. A central midfielder, Oyer started all 22 games and led Ball State with six assists as a sophomore in 2013. She scored three goals and added two more assists as a junior in 2014. She is just the sixth player in Ball State history to be named all-conference twice in her career.
