Classroom

In the classroom, Mandy McGlynn is a human nutrition, foods and exercise major, while she is also pursuing a minor in psychology and holds an overall 3.53 cumulative grade-point average. McGlynn is a two-time ACC All-Academic Team member (2017-18) and has made the school’s dean’s list twice while at Tech. After her playing career is over, she plans to attend physician assistant school, but will look to remain active in the sport, as a coach for a youth soccer team.

Character

McGlynn is one of the hardest workers on the team, and her dedication to the program is unmatched. Last season, she was a member of the U-20 US Women’s National Team, which played in World Cup in France, but she returned in time to play the first match of the 2018 season. In fact, she played every minute in goal for Tech last season. She leads by example, but is also very vocal in getting her team positioned correctly on the field, and she carries that approach with her teammates off the field.

Community

McGlynn has been very active in assisting with soccer camps throughout her career, including many held at Virginia Tech. Most recently, she helped at camps in Blacksburg over the summer and the team’s youth clinics by coaching, instructing, informing or entertaining, depending on the age level. Outside of soccer, McGlynn has volunteered at LewisGale Montgomery Hospital, assisting and discharging patients, cleaning the ER and running lab samples for the hospital.

Competition

McGlynn has positioned herself to go down as one of the program’s all-time best goalkeepers. She was named to the 2018 All-ACC First Team, becoming just the fourth Hokie ever and the program’s first goalkeeper to earn the honor. She’s already second all-time in many career categories, closing in on the top spot for career shutouts and wins. This season, she became the first goalkeeper to earn three straight shutouts to start a season and has posted five stretches of 300-plus scoreless streaks in her career. McGlynn has started 45 consecutive matches and is approaching 4,000 consecutive minutes played (entering action Sept. 5). When taking a lead with McGlynn in net, Tech is 33-0-2.
