Character

Ginyard was a team captain for the Tar Heels in 2007-08 and will serve again in the same capacity this season.  He sat out most of last season due to a broken bone in his foot, but was voted by his teammates as the player who contributed the most behind the scenes during the team’s national title run.

Community

Ginyard participates enthusiastically in North Carolina’s community service programs, including the Special Olympics clinic, the holiday shopping for underprivileged children and the autograph ball program.

Competition

Ginyard will enter the 2009-10 as a fifth-year senior and has played in 110 games at North Carolina.  As previously mentioned, Ginyard was a team captain in 2007-08 when the Tar Heels won the ACC championship and played in the Final Four in San Antonio.  He missed all but three games in 2008-09 because of an injury and received a medical hardship waiver from the ACC to play a fifth season.  Ginyard has started 55 of the 110 games he has played in and has been a part of 91 victories as a Tar Heel.  He missed only one game in his first three seasons due to an illness.  Ginyard was North Carolina’s defensive player of the year in 2006-07 and 2007-08 and was named to the ACC All-Defensive team in 2007-08 as well.  Additionally, he earned ACC All-Tournament team honors in 2008 after leading North Carolina to its record-setting 17th tournament title.  Ginyard has been named the Tar Heels’ defensive player of the game 20 times in his career (once as a freshman, eight times as a sophomore and 11 times as a junior) and has scored in double figures 17 times with a career high of 17 points scored against UC Santa Barbara on December 22, 2007.  He scored his 600th career point in the 2008 ACC Tournament final.  Ginyard is a versatile player and has played four different positions on the floor while at North Carolina.
