Mario Sequeira

Sequeira, a mass communications major, graduated with magna cum laude honors in the Spring of 2020. Throughout his academic career, he earned VCU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, Dean’s List honors three times, and A-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll three times.

In May of 2020, Sequeira was inducted into the Kappa Tau Alpha Honor Society, a prestigious society that recognizes academic excellence and promotes scholarship in journalism and mass communication. He was also selected to participate in and attended the NCAA Career in Sports Forum.

During his time on campus, Sequeira has written news articles for the VCU Capital News Service. He was included in the process of pitching stories, reporting, interviewing, writing, editing and both collecting and adding multimedia elements to stories. Some of his articles were published in local and national media publications, including The Washington Post and local CBS, NBC and ABC affiliates. In addition to written content, Sequeira produced video news packages in which he reported, wrote broadcast scripts, collected video and audio clips, and edited final packages. He has also designed a complete magazine prototype while in school.

He is currently enrolled in the VCU Center for Sports Leadership graduate program.

Character

Sequeira has proved himself to be of high character while at VCU. He is a three-time team captain, as voted on by his peers.

For the 2019-20 school year, he was selected as the Communications and Social Media Chair for the VCU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Sequeira was also selected by VCU as an ambassador for the “Invest in Me” campaign, which aims to raise funds to enhance experiences for selected students.

Community

During his time at VCU, Sequeira has been active in the community.

He worked with the Richmond Goalkeeping Academy for a school project of his. Sequeira continues to volunteer, coaching and assisting in both business operations and marketing strategies.

Since January of 2020, he has volunteered with Richmond Animal Care and Control.

Through the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Sequeira has also attended multiple community events and helped organize athletic-wide initiatives.

Competition

Sequeira has earned accolades for his success at VCU. He was named to the 2017 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team and 2018 Atlantic 10 All-Conference second team.

In 2018, VCU won the A-10 Regular Season Championship. Sequeira was also the starting keeper in 2017, when VCU finished as runner-ups in the A-10 and earned a 16 seed in the NCAA tournament.

He has appeared in 54 career matches, making 48 starts. He has allowed just 17 goals, good for a 1.05 GAA. In goal, Sequeira has racked up 27 wins and posted 18 shutouts.

He was a member of Costa Rica’s U20 National Team, where he helped his team advance to the U20 World Cup in South Korea.
