Classroom

Creighton guard Marissa Janning blossomed into a fine student, posting GPAs of 3.5 and 3.4 during her junior season. She has raised her cumulative GPA to 3.1 after declaring a marketing major following her sophomore season. Her academic accolades include spots on the dean’s list (3.5 or above) as both a sophomore and as a junior. Janning also is a two time Academic All-BIG EAST selection.

Character

Following the 2014-15 season, Janning earned the first BIG EAST Sportsmanship Award. Voted upon by coaches following the season, Janning was recognized for her ability to compete at the highest level and still respect her opponents as well as the game. Returning as the Bluejays team captain for a second season in 2015-16, Janning emerged into Creighton’s leader both on and off the court. Playing at the level that Janning does on the court often brings additional attention off the court, and she has handled every media request with dignity and class. More importantly she consistently makes time to sign autographs and spend time with Bluejay fans.

Community

Janning did more than simply participate in Creighton’s community service hours, she exceeded the requested total each year. She participated in the Bluejays’ activities with the ABIDE Network, which is an inner city, non-profit organization with a dream that one day Omaha would have no inner city.

Competition

The 2014 BIG EAST Player of the Year, Janning entered her senior season looking to recapture that title in 2016. She opened her senior campaign with 1,499 points, giving her a chance to become just the fourth Bluejay to reach the 2,000 mark. She is a two-time first-team All-BIG EAST selection, and she earned first-team All-MVC honors as a freshman. Janning was named a Freshman All-American in 2013 by Full-Court and earned honorable mention All-America honors from the WBCA in 2013-14. Janning led the Bluejays in scoring in each of her first three seasons and had 255 assists over three seasons.
