Classroom

Van Guilder is a sociology major at Notre Dame. He started his senior year with a 3.287 grade point average. During the spring of 2007, Van Guilder was selected to the Dean’s List at Notre Dame for the first time in his career with a 3.834 grade point average for the spring semester.

Character

Van Guilder is the team leader for the Irish this season as he was selected captain by his teammates prior to the start of the season. He leads by example both on and off the ice as hard work and dedication are the trademarks of his career at Notre Dame. He started his career in 2004-05 as a recruited walk-on and has worked his way into one of the top players in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) and at Notre Dame.

Community

Van Guilder is involved in the community service efforts of the Notre Dame hockey program. Among the activities that he has participated in are the team’s annual Buddy Walk that benefits local kids with Downs Syndrome and Notre Dame’s annual Christmas party for underprivledged kids. In addition, he has worked extensively with the youth hockey teams in the South Bend area as a volunteer coach.

Competition

Van Guilder is coming off a career season at Notre Dame in 2006-07 when he scored 18 goals with 16 assists for 34 points to finish fourth on the team in scoring as Notre Dame won its first-ever CCHA regular-season and tournament championship while winning a school-record 32 games (32-7-3). He helped the team with a fast start and was one of 40 players named a candidate for the Hobey Baker Award. This season, Mark is second on the team in scoring with six goals and three assists for nine points in 11 games as the Irish are 7-4-0 and ranked 10th in the nation. He has played in every game of his Notre Dame career, currently 127 consecutive games, and has 35 goals with 42 assists for 77 points.
