Classroom

Matt Outman is a two-time member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Commissioner’s All-Academic Team. He has a 3.1 GPA and is majoring in accounting. He also has been recognized on the NSU Athletics Director’s Honor Roll multiple times in his career.

Character

Outman epitomizes leadership and accountability. He serves as a leader both on the NSU pitching staff and for the entire team. He is a leader both vocally and through his actions and is as hard of a worker as there is on the NSU baseball team. Outman is a talented but humble player. A former Division III player who transferred up to Division I and is now the No. 1 pitcher on his team, he has maximized his potential through hard work and dedication to his craft.

Community

Outman is very involved in the local baseball community in Southeastern Virginia. He volunteers as a baseball instructor for several inner-city baseball academies. He also is front-and-center with many of NSU’s community service initiatives such as reading to local elementary school kids and running baseball clinics on campus.

Competition

Outman was the 2015 MEAC Pitcher of the Year, a 2015 ABCA All-East Region Second Team pick and is the 2016 MEAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year by both the MEAC and Baseball America. Outman went 8-2 with a 3.12 ERA in 2015, leading NSU to a 27-16 overall record (19-5 MEAC) and the Spartans’ first-ever MEAC Northern Division regular-season title. Outman led the MEAC in both pitching victories and strikeouts (85). He also ranked 39th nationally (D-I) in 2015 in strikeouts per nine innings. As of March 9 this season, he already had been named MEAC Pitcher of the Week once, an honor he won three times in 2015, and is 17-5 in his two-plus seasons at NSU.
