Classroom

Matt Read maintains a 3.09 GPA in exercise science. He is on pace to graduate in the spring of 2011 after four years at BSU. After hockey he plans to work in strength and conditioning.

Character

Read is a team captain in 2010-11 after being an assistant captain last year. He is the hardest-working player on the team and has earned several awards and been invited to attend multiple NHL development camps. He relocated several times growing up because his dad is in the Canadian military.

Community

Read volunteers at Bemidji elementary schools as a part of BSU’s partnership for mentoring youth. He also participates in several BSU fund raising and community involvement events such as BSU’s Walk for Women and Shriner’s parade. Read takes great pride in his local profile as an athlete and will assist the Bemidji High School boy’s hockey team this winter in the field of strength and conditioning.

Competition

After registering 41 points in his junior season, Read was honored as the CHA Player of the Year and a Hobey Baker Award nominee. He also made the first-team All-CHA as well as second-team RBK All-America. Read led the team with 22 assists and ranked second on the team with 19 goals. With at least 40 points in each of the last two seasons, Read became the first BSU player since 1996 to post back-to-back 40-point campaigns.
