Max Yon

Classroom

Yon has a 3.34 GPA in his major (management) and is ranked in the top 50 percent of overall cadets at the Academy for the Class of 2015. He made the Dean’s List both semesters of his junior year and was selected for undergraduate pilot training following graduation. He hopes to fly C-5s or C-17s in the Air Force.

Character

Yon worked as the squadron athletic officer his junior year and pushed cadets in Squad 35 to support Academy sporting events. His squadron was awarded for being the most supportive and spirited squad at athletic events. He is a safety officer this semester and manages the safety of cadets and the security of the squadron (locks, storage locker organization, etc.). He worked on the cadet leadership team last summer during Expeditionary Survival and Evasion Tactics training and helped 10 sophomore cadets to successfully evade through the woods and survive on their own for two full days. Yon worked as a sports camp counselor and volunteer coach during summer sports camps as well, guiding middle school youth at the Academy.

Community

Yon has been an active participant for the Dream to Read program every year at elementary schools, helping elementary kids reach their reading goals. He has participated in a local community trash pickup for his squadron, picking up trash in local parks off of Academy Blvd. in Colorado Springs. He has been an active supporter for an 8-year-old boy named Benny who was diagnosed with cancer, and participated in the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which funds childhood cancer research. He also participated in the annual YMCA Air Force Basketball Clinic for two years, teaching kids of all ages fundamentals of the game.

Competition

Yon was the only player on the team to start all 30 games last season and has been part of three victories over ranked opponents. He scored 11 points in the team’s victory against No. 13 SDSU and was named player of the game in the team’s first-ever victory over a team ranked higher than No. 20. He helped the team to the CIT tournament second round. As a junior, Yon played the most minutes of all players, averaged 13 ppg and led the team in assists with 75. He earned the Jeff Bowling Assist Leader Award for the 2013-14 season and was second on the team in steals with 25. He set a career high 24 points against South Dakota and tied the school’s record for most steals in a game with seven, the most by any player in the MWC last season.
