Classroom

Melvin is a two-time member of the Academic All-Big 12 First Team. He was the Big 12’s Inaugural Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s basketball and earned Capital One Academic All-District 6 honors in 2013. Ejim earned the right to be a member of the prestigious Phi Kappa Phi Academic Honors Society last year and also joined Iowa State’s Cardinal Key club, which only allows people with the following four qualities: 1. Leadership in university activities has been exemplary. 2. Scholarship is of high standing. 3. Character is above reproach. 4. Service to the university community has been outstanding. He maintains a GPA above 3.0.

Character

Melvin is one of the most humble student-athletes. He is very thankful and grateful for this opportunity. Always willing to sign an autograph or take a picture with a fan, Melvin is a fan favorite in Ames for both his play on the court and his character. He was a captain as voted upon by his teammates last year and will likely be captain again.

Community

Melvin has served as the men’s basketball team representative for three years on our Student-Athlete Advisory Council. He has served as a panelist during ISCORE (Iowa State Conference on Race and Ethnicity) and Character Counts. Melvin also volunteered for our Soles4Souls shoe drive and served as the Honorary Chair for the Special Olympics of Iowa in the summer of 2013. As the chair, Ejim declared the games open for competition. He has also participated in the NABC’s Stay In To Win event. He’s signed autographs at the following: VEISHEA parade (annual university celebration), Campustown Summerfest, Middle school financial literacy event as well as a number of other university functions.

Competition

On the court, Ejim earned All-Big 12 Third-Team honors and was selected to the NABC All-District 8 Second Team. Ejim led the Big 12 in rebounding with 9.3 rebounds per game to go along with 11.3 points per game. His 9.3 rebounds per game was 33rd nationally, despite being just 6-6. Ejim also led the Big 12 with 15 double-doubles, recording one against every Big 12 team. Ranked sixth in the Big 12 in field-goal percentage (50.4). Also led the league in offensive rebounding with 3.2 offensive boards per game. His 20 double-digit rebounding efforts was tops in the Big 12. Earned one Big 12 Player of the Week honor. Scored a career-high 23 points and snared 12 boards in the win over Oklahoma in the Big 12 Tournament. Became the 30th member of the ISU 1,000-point club during the season and is one of three players in school history with 1,000 points, 700 rebounds and 100 steals. Played for Canada in the World University Games this summer.
