Miranda Ayim

Classroom

As a public relations major with a 3.70 grade point average, Ayim was the 2008-09 recipient of the Pepperdine Women’s Scholar/Athlete of the Year award. She received the WCC All-Academic award in 2007 and 2008 and was selected to the CoSida/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team. She was named to the WCC All-Academic Team, WCC’s Commissioner’s Honor Roll “Silver” and the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award second team.

Character

Ayim is the 2009-10 co-captain of the Pepperdine women’s basketball team. She gave up the opportunity to play on the Canadian Junior National Team this summer so she could stay at Pepperdine and help the incoming freshmen make the transition to university life. Ayim is an outstanding role model with ethics and moral values. She leads her teammates by example. In 2008-09, Ayim was the Pepperdine Female Athlete of the Year based on her all-around athletic achievements and academic success as well as her leadership, integrity and work ethic.

Community

In the community, Ayim has participated in Pepperdine’s Step Forward Day all three years, spending the day doing community service with her teammates. She has helped serve Thanksgiving dinner at the Los Angeles Homeless Shelter every year and was a Big Sister for A Chance for Children program benefitting underprivileged youth in the Los Angeles area. She has served as a mentor and is a member of the Pepperdine Student-Athletic Counsel for four years. Ayim has held an office for three years: co-vice president 2007-08, 08-09, and 09-10. She has participated in a variety of SAAC community service projects including canned food drives, Soles 4 Souls, Mr. All-American and the toiletries drive

Competition

For her career, Ayim is a two-time All-WCC first team selection. Through three seasons, she is averaging 10.3 points and 6.0 rebounds. She has played in 87 games, making 68 starts and averaging 26.5 minutes. On Pepperdine’s career records, Ayim ranks sixth in blocked shots (97) and eighth in field goal percentage (50.6%). As a junior, Ayim led the team in scoring with 311 points, averaging 11.5 per game. She led the team with 147 rebounds and had 19 double-digit scoring games. As a sophomore, she averaged 13.8 points per game and was the second leading scorer with 368 points. She led the team in field goal percentage with 55.7 percent and had a 72.9 percent free throw average. Her freshman year she averaged 7.2 points per game and 4.1 rebounds. She was second on the team with 103 rebounds for the season. Ayim has played with several Canadian Junior National Teams. She helped lead Canada to a silver medal finish at the 2006 U-19 FIBA World Championship qualifying tournament.
