Character

Mitchell Wilbekin is in his first year as a team captain in the 2017-18 season. He is the men’s basketball representative for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which transforms student-athletes into leaders who can better serve their campus and community. He is also a member of Athletes in Action, an interdenominational Christian ministry dedicated to turning athletic influencers into leaders.

Community

As the men’s basketball representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Wilbekin spends time with many Wake Forest community events, including Hit the Bricks, an annual event that raises awareness and funds for cancer research; Project Pumpkin, a safe alternative to trick-or-treating for Winston-Salem children; Santa’s Helpers, which delivers donated toys to local children; and Wake N Shake, Wake Forest’s Dance Marathon. Wilbekin has volunteered with the Salvation Army’s Boys and Girls club and at Special Olympics Clinics. He is active with the Skip Prosser Literacy Program, through which athletes read to local elementary school students.

Competition

Wilbekin has started 66 games over his first three seasons, leading the team in free throw percentage each year. He made his first 16 free throws of the 2016-17 season before his first miss, a streak of 31 consecutive free throws dating back to 2015-16 and the longest streak by a Deac since 1999-00. He entered his senior season with 148 career 3-pointers, the ninth most in Wake Forest history, and has recorded 31 double figure games in his career.
