Character

A draft pick of the Los Angeles Kings in 2009, Dowd has opted to stay in school and has established himself as a team leader at SCSU.  He was selected by his teammates as a team captain for 2013-14 thanks in part to his top-notch work ethic and vocal leadership abilities.  Dowd served as his team’s spokesperson at the University’s recent grand re-opening ceremonies of the Huskies’ home rink in front of close to 1,000 spectators.  Dowd also served as the driving force behind the Huskies’ Locks of Love hair growing campaign in 2012-13 (see Community section for details).  Nic is the epitome of the phrase “student-athlete.”  He is an award winning student in the classroom, his teammates respect him and look to him for leadership and his hockey talent has placed him among the best in nation.  Nic’s desire to come back for his senior season also reflects on his outstanding character.

Community

Dowd gained a portion of the media spotlight in 2012-13 thanks to his work with the Locks of Love campaign.  At the end of his sophomore season, Dowd decided it would be a great idea to continue growing out his playoff hair and eventually donate his hair to the Locks of Love campaign.  Dowd then talked five other teammates into growing their hair out during the entire length of the 2012-13 season.  Dowd and his hair-growing teammates then donated their clipped locks at the end of the season.  In addition to his work with the Locks of Love program, Dowd has helped on an annual basis with the “Skate with the Huskies” community outreach event and has served as a “Husky Hauler” on the campus move-in day that assist new students move into SCSU’s dorms.  Dowd has worked with SCSU’s Student Athlete Advisory Council and took part in a Salvation Army “red kettle” kick-off event while at SCSU.  Dowd has helped with the local humane society and two summers ago he served as a “foster parent” for a dog that was recovering from surgery.  In addition, Dowd along with Senior CLASS All-American Ben Hanowski helped with the “Flyer Jams” film project for the P.E. department at nearby Little Falls H.S. (Little Falls, MN).

Competition

One of SCSU’s offensive leaders, Dowd tied a school record by charting five game winning goals in 2012-13.  Dowd ranked 2nd on the team with 39 points (14g/25a) last year.  He helped lead SCSU to the NCAA Frozen Four, a 2013 NCAA Midwest Regional championship and a 2013 WCHA championship.  In four seasons at SCSU, Dowd has charted 32 goals, 52 assists and 84 points.  He has charted eight power play goals, two shorthanded goals and eight game winners during his career with the Huskies.  Dowd had 12 multi-point games in 2012-13 and was a prime player for the Huskies on both the power play and penalty kill.  Dowd is an all-around player, who excels on both ends of the ice.  Last year, Dowd ranked second on the team with 47 blocked shots.  His work helped the Huskies ranked third in the nation with a 3.36 goals per game average (141 total), while allowing only 103 goals last year.
