Classroom
Mattson owns a 3.971 cumulative grade-point average and was a 2014 CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large Third Team selection. He received the NCAA Elite 89 Award for having the highest grade-point average among all 2014 NCAA Frozen Four participants. In 2012-13 he was a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection and has now earned two straight Academic All-Conference honors. Mattson has been named to the Dean’s List five different semesters and was a 2013-14 recipient of UND’s Marcus & Lynn Chorney Men’s Hockey Scholarship Endowment. He also is a two-time recipient of the Lynn & Shirlee Leinginger Impact Scholarship and was a 2012-13 WCHA Scholar-Athlete.
Character
Mattson was the 2011-12 recipient of UND’s Tom Hoghaug Memorial Scholarship, given to the freshman who demonstrates initiative, character and a sense of responsibility.
Community
Mattson has devoted his time to 20 community service events in four years at UND, spanning nearly 50 hours of volunteer time. He has worked with multiple organizations including but not limited to the Special Olympics, North Dakota State Fair, Hockey Day at the Grand Forks Public Library, Grand Forks Youth Hockey Association, Junior Champions Skate, Presents for Underprivileged Children, Potato Bowl USA French Fry Feed and Champions Club Thank-A-Thon.
Competition
A draft pick of the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks, Mattson leads all active UND defensemen (fourth among active NCHC defensemen) with 66 points in 138 career games. He entered this year coming off a 2013-14 season in which he established career highs in points (23) and assists (19). He was ranked fifth among NCHC defensemen in scoring and was named the NCHC Defenseman of the Week (Feb. 17, 2014). He assisted on both of UND’s goals in a 2-1, double overtime win over No. 6 Ferris State in the 2014 NCAA Midwest Region championship game.
