Nick Schilkey, a finance major with a 3.779 grade-point average, is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a three-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete. He was honored as a 2016 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar after posting a grade-point average of 3.7+ during the school year. He is a three-time Dean’s List honoree who will graduate this spring.

Following the end of his hockey career, Schilkey would like to use his finance degree to find a job back in Detroit. He says his goal is “to be a part of the revitalization of the city that is occurring and will continue to happen over the next decade and beyond. Being from Detroit is something I take pride in and knowing so many people have viewed it in a negative light during my lifetime makes me excited for the opportunities the city is going to create in the future and the expansions that have already begun taking place.”

Character

Schilkey is in his second season wearing the captain’s C for Ohio State and was a unanimous selection by his teammates. He has just 15 minor penalties in 111 games as a Buckeye.

Buckeye Head Coach Steve Rohlik said this about his captain to the Ohio State Lantern: “He’s already had such a huge impact on this program, not only by being a great player, but by being a great person. I can’t say enough about him. He’s one of those guys, as a coach, you love having him in your program.”

Community

This year, Schilkey is serving as the Ohio State team representative for Buckeye Buddies. Part of the BuckeyeThon program at Ohio State, the Buckeye Buddies pairs miracle kids with a team for activities and events throughout the year.

In addition, Schilkey has spent time reading to elementary school students through the Second and Seven Foundation and delivering the Buckeyes’ Teddy Bear Toss donations to Ronald McDonald House.

Competition

The Buckeyes opened their year undefeated in their first eight games (6-0-2), and as of mid-January, Schilkey had a conference-leading 15 goals and a team-leading 23 points. He was named B1G Second Star of the Week (his fifth career conference weekly honor) Oct. 25.

Schilkey was a second-team All-B1G honoree in 2016 after leading Ohio State with 19 goals and 41 points, ranking in the top five in the B1G in both categories. He also was selected by the conference coaches as a Big Ten Preseason Player to Watch as a sophomore, junior and senior.

As of mid-January, Schilkey had played in 124 career games with 57 goals and 55 assists for 112 points.
